Hi Michael.
I certainly do apologize for the frustration this may have caused you. I would just like to take this opportunity to address this issue so that others may be running similar backups are aware of the root cause and preventive steps.
According to Microsoft this is a Microsoft transport bug that may be exposed by any application or process that uses DAV or transport sinks within the environment. These applications include, but are not limited to
| • | Antivirus applications. |
| • | Anti-spam applications. |
| • | Applications that add a disclaimer to a message. |
| • | Applications that archive messages. |
Further information regarding this issue is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822909
The issue was addressed in a SP update published in September of 2003. If the updates for A 2000 box have been applied, this issue will not occur.
More info on the update and hotfix itself can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814891/en-us
The hard repair article noted above is specific to Exchange 5.5 only.
You will not lose any mail as a result of the Exclaimer interaction with your environment, or by the bug itself. If the repair process finds other non related anomalies during the process caused by other environmental problems that may result in loss of the messages.
Once again I do apologize for this issue yo are experiencing. If you have any other questions, or would like to post a status update when the server has been brought current with the updates and repair, please feel free to continue posting information into this thread.
Bill
