Veritas 9.1 backup fails since Exclaimer mail utility installed

    Windows 2000 server / Exchange 2000 enterprise / Veritas 9.1

Since I have installed Exclaimer mail utility I am not getting successful backup of Exchange Server.

    Veritas error is listed as:

Final error: 0xa0008488 - Access is denied.   Database or database element is corrupt.

Also I find the following in Microsoft event log:

     Source: ESE  Event ID: 478

Information Store (3152) The streaming page read from the file "E:\MDBDATA|Priv1.stm failed verification due to a page checksum mismatch.

Is there a fix for this.  I need to be able to backup my Exchange server.

I found some KB in Microsoft which is specifically refer to Exclaimer and asks to remove it!

     Thanks.

    Hi Joshua,

Thanks for your reply. I am still getting the same error after installing and restarting the Sept 2003 Exchange 2000 rollup update.  Any other thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Hi Michael,

The hotfix will stop this issue reoccurring, however you will need to repair the corrupted database before the backup will successful again.

    Joshua,

Hard repair of Exchange database has some ramifications see below Microsoft KB:

     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259851

There are two problems. 1) My Exchange database is over 170GB so the repair process will takes days based on the KB listed above.

                                         2) I will lose all the emails, etc of each fix when the MS utility finds a checksum error.

I can't affort neither of the above.  Your tech support person that installed and implement the Mail Utility must be informed that your application does not work unless certain conditions are true about installing on Server 2000.

Re: Veritas 9.1 backup fails since Exclaimer mail utility installed

    Hi Michael.

I certainly do apologize for the frustration this may have caused you.  I would just like to take this opportunity to address this issue so that others may be running similar backups are aware of the root cause and preventive steps.

According to Microsoft this is a Microsoft transport bug that may be exposed by any application or process  that uses DAV or transport sinks within the environment.  These applications include, but are not limited to

    Antivirus applications.
    Anti-spam applications.
Applications that add a disclaimer to a message.
    Applications that archive messages.

Further information regarding this issue is available  here:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822909

The issue was addressed in a SP update published in September of 2003.   If the updates for A 2000 box have been applied, this issue will not occur.

More info on the update and hotfix itself can be found here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814891/en-us

The hard repair article noted above is specific to Exchange 5.5 only.

You will not lose any mail as a result of the Exclaimer interaction with your environment, or by the bug itself.  If the repair process finds other non related anomalies during the process caused by other environmental problems  that may result in loss of the messages.

Once again I do apologize for this issue yo are experiencing. If you have any other questions, or would like to post a status update when the server has been brought current with the updates and repair, please feel free to continue posting information into this thread.
